The West Coast is home to several rest homes, from Greymouth and Hokitika all the way up to Buller.
The West Coast offers a range of residential care options. A needs assessment can help determine the level of care required, and you can then use the filters on our search pages to find a rest home which meets your needs.
While most rest homes on the West Coast are independently owned, Ultimate Care is a larger provider with a presence in Hokitika.
The New Zealand government offers a residential care subsidy to help cover rest home costs. If you are eligible, your level of financial support will depend on your income and assets.
Eligibility depends on age, financial status and whether your chosen rest home is contracted to the DHB. It also depends on the completion of a needs assessment, which will confirm the requirement for permanent residential care.
For more information on this financial support, read our article explaining how the residential care subsidy works in New Zealand.
A needs assessment is used to determine the level of support you require. Though the assessment is not obligatory in all cases, it can be very helpful. It can provide clarity on the kinds of care available to you, as well as information about facilities in your area.
