Rest Homes Southland

Southland has a number of rest homes, with most found in Gore and Invercargill. There are boutique local rest homes such as Gore’s Albany House and Invercargill’s Walmsley House, as well as some of the major operators such as Ryman Healthcare, Enliven and Bupa.

Residential Care Subsidy

Depending on your eligibility, the government offers a residential care subsidy to help cover rest home costs. Your level of support will depend on your income and assets.

Eligibility depends on age, financial status, whether your chosen rest home is contracted to the DHB and whether you have completed a needs assessment. A needs assessment confirms whether you require permanent residential care.

Needs assessment

A needs assessment is used to determine the level of support you require. Though the assessment is not obligatory in all cases, it can provide clarity on the care and support services that are available to you, as well as information about facilities in your area.

For more information, read our article explaining the details of the needs assessment.
