There are many rest homes in Northland, from Kaipara all the way to the Far North. Whangarei, the region’s main centre, offers the widest variety, but you’ll also find rest homes across Northland’s more rural areas.
Not all rest homes offer the same level of care, and a needs assessment will determine the level of care required. You can then use the filters on our search pages to find rest homes which offer the care you need.
Many of the larger rest home operators have a presence in Northland, including Ryman Healthcare, Metlifecare and Bupa.
In New Zealand, the government offers a residential care subsidy to help cover rest home costs for eligible people. The amount you will be required to contribute depends on your income and assets.
Eligibility for the subsidy depends on several factors, including age, financial status, whether the care home has a contract with the DHB and if a needs assessment has confirmed the requirement for permanent residential care.

A needs assessment is a process that helps determine a person’s requirements for support services and whether they meet the criteria for long-term residential care. Needs assessments are performed by a DHB-approved assessor, and can provide clarity on what kinds of care are available to you.
For more information, check out our article on what is a needs assessment.
Not everyone requires the same level of care. If you are looking for independent living or assisted living options, use our search pages to find Retirement Villages in Northland.
