There are more than 15 rest homes in Palmerston North. To get an idea of the different types of rest homes and what they offer, it’s a good idea to visit several in-person and meet with staff and residents.
Most rest homes in Palmerston North are small, meaning they have fewer than 50 beds. There are a few mid-sized rest homes with between 50 and 100 beds and one large rest home with more than 100 beds (according to listings on Village Guide).
No matter the size of the rest home, most will offer two room types: standard and premium. Standard rooms are single sized rooms with space for a few small items of furniture, such as an armchair. Premium rooms are different depending on the rest home, but in general they are more spacious than standard rooms and include a premium feature such as a private outdoor area or ensuite bathroom.
Some rest homes in Palmerston North offer specialised care, such as dementia care, while others offer rest home level and hospital level care only. Exact levels of care differ from rest home to rest home, so it’s important to research this carefully when comparing options.
Navigate to the search function at the top of this page to filter your search by suburb, level(s) of care, rest home size, and more. If you need further assistance, please refer to the box titled ‘Need help finding a rest home?’ and follow the steps.
What someone pays to live in a rest home in Palmerston North depends on several factors, including the type of room they choose (i.e. premium or standard), whether they opt for any premium services, the level of care they require, and their eligibility for the Residential Care Subsidy. We have written a rest home care resource page which covers the pricing structure in more detail.
Funded by the Ministry of Health, the Residential Care Subsidy contributes towards the overall cost of living in a rest home. The government pays it directly to the rest home provider on the resident’s behalf. Not everyone is eligible for the subsidy; eligibility is determined by a Needs Assessment and an assets and income test.
No rest home in Palmerston North can charge a resident more than a certain amount – a Maximum Contribution – each week (excluding premium features and fees). The Maximum Contribution for Palmerston North City is currently $1,118.25 [source: Gazette, June 2021]. NB: The Maximum Contribution is updated annually around July.
There are currently around six rest homes listed on Village Guide that provide dementia care in Palmerston North. Dementia care is for people with dementia or cognitive impairment, of which Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common type. These types of conditions affect individuals differently, so dementia care is flexible enough to meet the needs of people with different symptoms.
Before receiving dementia care, someone must be assessed as requiring it by a Needs Assessment. To book a Needs Assessment, please contact your local branch of NASC (Needs Assessment and Service Coordination).
Rest homes in Palmerston North that provide dementia care must adhere to a strict set of standards. These are outlined in the Health and Disability Services (Safety) Act 2001. Each rest home offering dementia care will be audited regularly to ensure their compliance with these standards.
Towards the top of this page, there’s a drop-down menu called ‘level of care’ (it sits underneath the green ‘search rest homes’ button). This menu allows you to filter rest homes on Village Guide by dementia care.
Rest homes that provide dementia care should also provide person-centred care, as this is a cornerstone of the New Zealand Framework for Dementia Care. Person-centred care refers to care that places an individual (and their unique needs and preferences) at the heart of their care plan. When visiting Palmerston North rest homes, ask about their approach to person-centred care.
