Auckland’s North Shore is home to many rest homes. With many different facilities, it’s a good idea to visit a few to get a feel for what’s available. To arrange a visit with a North Shore rest home, please contact the care manager.
There are several types of rest homes on the North Shore. There are small rest homes with around 50 beds, right through to larger rest homes with 150 beds or more. Some are in quiet suburban streets, while others are central to shops, transport, and other amenities.
Most rest homes include two room types: standard rooms and premium rooms. Standard rooms tend to be single rooms, with space for a single bed and one or two small pieces of furniture, such as a television or armchair. Premium rooms tend to be more spacious and come with additional comforts, such as a private ensuite or garden access.
Each rest home on the North Shore will offer different levels of care. For example, some rest homes will offer every level of care available – including specialist care, such as Dementia Care – while others offer a more limited range.
It’s easy to search for rest homes on the North Shore on Village Guide. Simply navigate to the top-left of this page, where you’ll find a form allowing you to filter rest homes by suburb. Another way to search for rest homes is by completing the ‘Need Help Finding A Rest Home?’ form, which is located on the top-right of this page.
The cost of a rest home depends on several factors, such as room type or services needed. Often, the main factor influencing the total cost is whether the person moving into the rest home is eligible for the Residential Care Subsidy.
The Residential Care Subsidy is a government-funded subsidy that contributes to the cost of living in a North Shore rest home. To be eligible to receive the subsidy, someone must require long-term care according to a Needs Assessment. They must also meet the criteria of an income and assets test.
There’s a cap on how much a North Shore rest home is entitled to charge per week for standard services – this is called the Maximum Contribution. Set by the Ministry of Health, the Maximum Contribution is updated annually each July. The Maximum Contribution for North Shore City is currently $1,188.81 [Gazette, April 2021]. Please note, the Maximum Contribution does not apply to premium rooms or services.
Several rest homes on the North Shore provide specialised Dementia Care. This type of care is for people with memory-related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s Disease. Most rest homes that provide specialist Dementia Care are equipped to support residents at all stages of cognitive decline.
Eligibility for Dementia Care is determined by a Needs Assessment. Carried out by the Needs Assessment Service Coordination (NASC), this assessment will identify the exact level of care someone needs. Please contact your local NASC office to arrange an assessment.
Each rest home that provides Dementia Care must adhere to the standards outlined in the Health and Disability Services (Safety) Act 2001. Rest homes on the North Shore are regularly audited to ensure they meet these standards.
You can use Village Guide to find Dementia Care on the North Shore. Simply change your search to sort by level of care – you can activate this feature just underneath the main search button towards the top of the page. Click ‘level of care’ and select ‘Dementia Care’ to filter the search results.
Another important feature to be aware of is person-centred care. Part of the New Zealand Framework for Dementia Care by the Ministry of Health, person-centred care is about placing the resident at the heart of every service and decision made about their care. For example, it ensures the person receiving care gets tailored support according to their personal background, needs, and preferences. When visiting rest homes on the North Shore, be sure to ask how they apply person-centred care.
