Decluttering FAQs with Katie Fitzpatrick

Katie provides answers to the most commonly asked downsizing questions to support you on your journey.

Here are some of her answers which might help you on your downsizing journey.

1. Does everyone need to declutter?

“Everyone collects. Everyone has something that they collect,” says Katie. And with collecting comes clutter.

Of course, there are extremes at both ends, and everyone is different. But on the whole, if you’re looking to downsize, you will likely need to undertake some form of decluttering.

2. How long will decluttering take?

The exact question was, ‘how long will it take someone to downsize a family home to a two-bedroom apartment?’

As Katie explains, it really depends on the individuals involved and how much clutter they have to start with.

“That is all on a case-by-case basis. But most times, we pack in one day and we move on the next day. Depending on the size of the job, the team will be larger,” says Katie.

3. Where can I sell my unwanted items?

If you have good quality items, such as crystal, china, quality clothing, and other valuable possessions, there are places you can sell these for a financial return.

“A lot of the time, you can call a trader. Clothing, you can take to a recycled clothing store if it’s good quality,” says Katie.

She’s happy to refer you on to the right places to sell – simply email info@movingon.nz for more information.

4. How much does professional decluttering cost?

“It can be anywhere from $3,000 upwards. When we say pack up, this is a total service. So we pack, we relocate, and we unpack. Even down to making your bed,” says Katie.

Of course, every decluttering and relocation job is different, and Katie is happy to provide a custom quote.

5. Can my family help?

“Often that can be a little bit tricky, but of course. Because it can be such a big journey, the family assisting is often very cathartic,” says Katie.

The important thing is to ensure everyone is on the same page and is respectful of your decisions. Enlisting your family’s support from an early stage can be beneficial.
